Parenting is one of the most meaningful things you can do and one of the most exhausting. The love is real and so is the stress, the self-doubt, the guilt, and the constant pressure to get it right. If you are finding parenting harder than you expected, or harder than it used to be, you are not alone and you do not have to figure it out by yourself.

I am Dr. Abby Halston (Ed.D., NCC, LMFT-S), and I provide online individual therapy for parents navigating the emotional challenges of raising children throughout Hawaiʻi. Sessions are via secure telehealth, accessible statewide from wherever your day takes you.

What Parenting Stress Can Look Like

Parenting stress is not just feeling tired. It is the weight of being responsible for another person while also trying to hold your own life together. Common experiences include:

  • Feeling overwhelmed, depleted, or like you are running on empty
  • Losing your patience more than you want to and feeling guilty about it
  • Worrying constantly about whether you are doing enough or doing it right
  • Struggling to connect with your child in the way you want to
  • Feeling like your identity has been swallowed by your role as a parent
  • Navigating co-parenting conflict or disagreements with a partner about parenting
  • Managing a child with big emotions, behavioral challenges, or special needs
  • Feeling isolated or unsupported in your parenting role
  • Carrying unresolved feelings about your own childhood that are coming up now
  • Balancing the demands of work, family, and everything else with no room left for yourself

In Hawaiʻi, parenting can come with additional layers: extended family expectations, cultural norms around how children should be raised, the financial pressure of living in one of the most expensive states in the country, and limited access to mental health support outside of Honolulu. All of it is real and all of it can be addressed in therapy.

How Therapy Helps

How Therapy Helps

Stacked smooth stones on mossy forest ground.

Therapy for parenting stress is not parenting classes. It is not about being told what to do differently. It is a space to process what is hard, understand what is driving your stress, and build the emotional steadiness that makes you a more present and grounded parent.

I work with you to:

  • Identify the specific pressures and patterns that are depleting you most
  • Process guilt, anger, or grief tied to your parenting experience
  • Develop practical strategies for managing your own emotional responses
  • Explore how your own childhood history is showing up in your parenting
  • Strengthen your sense of identity and self outside of your parenting role
  • Navigate co-parenting challenges with more clarity and less reactivity
  • Find a sustainable way to care for your children while also caring for yourself

The most important thing a parent can do for their children is take care of themselves. Therapy is one of the most direct ways to do that.

What is therapy for parenting stress?
Therapy for parenting stress is individual therapy focused on the emotional challenges of raising children. Rather than offering parenting advice or techniques, it gives parents a private space to process what is hard, understand their own patterns and responses, and build the emotional capacity to show up for their children in the way they want to.

Is parenting therapy the same as family therapy or child therapy?
No. This is individual therapy for the parent. It focuses on your experience, your emotional health, and your goals as a parent. Your children do not attend sessions. If family therapy or child therapy is also recommended, Dr. Halston can help you identify appropriate referrals.

Does Dr. Halston work with parenting challenges related to divorce or co-parenting?
Yes. Dr. Halston works with parents navigating co-parenting conflict, separation, and the emotional complexity of raising children across two households. Therapy can help you manage the stress of co-parenting and respond to your children from a steadier, less reactive place.

Does Dr. Halston offer therapy for parenting stress online in Hawaiʻi?
Yes. All sessions are conducted via secure telehealth, making therapy accessible to parents across Hawaiʻi including Oʻahu, Maui, the Big Island, Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi.

Does insurance cover parenting stress therapy in Hawaiʻi?
HMSA, UHA, and HMAA are accepted for eligible telehealth therapy services. Coverage varies by plan. Contact your insurer to confirm your behavioral health and telehealth benefits before your first appointment.

I love my children but I am struggling. Does that mean something is wrong with me?
No. Struggling with parenting does not mean you are a bad parent. It means you are a human being carrying a significant responsibility, often without enough support. Reaching out for help is one of the most honest and courageous things a parent can do.

How is parenting stress therapy different from self-care advice?
Self-care advice tells you what to do. Therapy helps you understand why things feel as hard as they do and builds the internal resources to sustain change over time. It addresses the emotional roots of parenting stress rather than just the surface symptoms.
